What Are Air Cooled Chillers and How They Work?
Air-cooled liquid chillers are a type of refrigeration system commonly used to cool process fluids, equipment, or spaces in industrial, commercial, and institutional settings. They rely on ambient air to reject heat and are favored for their simplicity, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness compared to water-cooled chillers. Air-cooled chillers reject heat directly to the air, avoiding the need for water management systems. Air cooled chillers also require less infrastructure compared to water cooled chillers (e.g., no cooling towers, pumps, or piping for water circulation) and offer simpler maintenance.
Working Principle of Air Cooled Chillers
- Refrigerant Cycle:
- Refrigerant absorbs heat in the evaporator, cooling the process liquid.
- The heated refrigerant vapor is compressed, increasing its temperature and pressure.
- In the condenser, heat is rejected to the surrounding air, and the refrigerant condenses into a high-pressure liquid.
- The expansion valve reduces the refrigerant pressure, preparing it to re-enter the evaporator and complete the cycle.
- Process Liquid Loop:
- The cooled liquid (usually water or a glycol-water mixture) circulates through the process or space being cooled, transferring heat to the refrigerant in the evaporator.
Air-cooled liquid chillers offer a robust solution for diverse cooling needs, particularly in areas where water resources are limited or infrastructure for water-cooled systems is impractical. Their versatility and relative simplicity make them a popular choice across multiple industries.
